Hop & Malt Adventures

Morning Trail Running

Running Through Hanno City in Winter

Hello!
Japan is getting colder, and even in Kanto, the central region of the country, the temperature often drops below 10°C.
During this season, the humidity in the Kanto area becomes low, and many sunny days prevail.
This makes it an excellent season for running.

In the coming weeks, local citizen marathon races will be held across the country.
During the New Year holidays, two unique Japanese long-distance relay races take place: the “New Year Ekiden,” a race for corporate teams, and the “Hakone Ekiden,” a university competition in Kanto.

Taking advantage of these ideal conditions, I went trail running with my mentor over the weekend.
Here is my report on that experience.

Report

Today was very windy, and running on the roads made me feel the chilly wind against my body.
While the streets felt cold, the forest was much warmer because the trees blocked the wind.
When I started running, the temperature was 12°C, but by noon, it temporarily rose to 19°C, making it a warm day.

The sunlight peeking through the trees created a magical landscape.

The route passes through residential areas, so please run quietly in these zones.
You will also encounter elderly people walking along the same paths.
When passing them, consider walking to avoid startling them.

Today’s Hop and Malt Adventure

Name: Gremlin IPA ver.5
Brewery: ONIDENSETSU (鬼伝説); Noboribetsu, Hokkaido
ABV: 7.5%
IBU: 70

This IPA, brewed by a Hokkaido brewery, features an intense fruity hop aroma.
In my opinion, IPAs from Hokkaido breweries typically have a robust bitterness and a slightly sweet aftertaste, characteristic of ales.
It’s a drink that reflects the cold northern climate and a deep love for hops.
How about rewarding yourself with this after a hard training session?
